Maine Playwrights Fest calls for scripts

Nov 13, 2017

Portland — Acorn Productions, producers of the annual Maine Playwrights Festival, is accepting scripts for the 17th edition of the state’s long-running incubator for new plays by local playwrights. The competition is open to all Maine residents; deadline is Saturday, Dec. 2.

Plays of between eight and 30 minutes in length will be considered. Acorn anticipates selecting five to eight plays, which will be developed and honed from submission through staged readings and rewrites, culminating in a series of public performances. The 2018 Maine Playwrights Festival will be held April 26 to May 5 at the Studio Theater at Portland Stage.

Artistic Director/Dramaturg Daniel Burson leads the festival, which will be produced through a collaboration of Maine-based directors, actors and designers, working with professional Playwright-in-Residence Callie Kimball. Each selected script will be fully staged and performed on every show night during the festival. Several playwrights whose work is not selected for inclusion in the full festival will be offered the opportunity to develop their plays through a by-invitation-only rewriting workshop with Kimball and have them shared in an evening of dramatic readings held at the start of the festival week.
