Rockland — The Maine Lobster Festival presented Oceanside High School East with a $1,500 check Nov. 27 to support the high school's Christmas holiday fund.

Oceanside East Principal Tom Forti said the holiday fund began approximately six years ago when office staff began buying coats, hats, and gloves for needy students. Since then the initiative has expanded to provide gift cards and toys.

"We take a great deal of pride in our community service," Forti said, adding that the initiative is "getting bigger every year."

According to Forti, teachers, the student support team, and organizations such as Trekkers make referrals of appropriate beneficiaries. Students choose their own items, and their participation is treated "as confidentially as the student wants."

Maine Lobster Festival Vice President-elect Brian Plourde, who is a health teacher at Oceanside East, said that the Maine Lobster Festival has donated more than $22,000 to Oceanside East in the last year. In addition to contributing to initiatives such as the holiday fund, Maine Lobster Festival donations were put toward such items as new stage curtains and athletic uniforms.

Forti described the Maine Lobster Festival's financial support of the holiday fund and recently distributed Thanksgiving baskets as "extremely generous."

Businesses interested in contributing to the holiday fund should contact the main office at Oceanside East by calling 596-2010.
