Lund brings Anderson to ‘Groove Shop’

Oct 03, 2017

Orland — Lincolnville’s Michael Paul Lund will make a guest appearance Thursday, Oct. 12, on Holbrook Williams’ “Groove Shop” program on WERU-FM from 6 to 8 p.m. The show will focus on the music of Leroy Anderson, with all music supplied from Lund’s archives.

After Gershwin, Anderson is the most recorded composer of popular light classical music, said Lund. Among his best-known compositions are “Sleigh Ride,” “The Syncopated Clock” and “Blue Tango.” Lund lived in Connecticut for 24 years and there had the opportunity of befriending Anderson's widow, Eleanor Anderson, who was the composer’s champion after he died in 1975 at age 66.

“Eleanor and I often talked on the phone … she was a tireless worker for her husband’s music until her passing at age 96 in 2014,” said Lund.

After Leroy’s death, Eleanor made public many works that had been unheard or suppressed during his lifetime. They include his Piano Concerto in C Major, some of which Lund will play during the show.

“Leroy's son, Kurt Anderson, is still with us and runs the very successful radio station WMNR-FM — like WERU, a listener-supported radio station,” Lund said.

The program can be heard at 89.9 (Blue Hill) and 99.9 (Bangor) FM; and streaming at weru.org.
