Lesson 5- Spiritual Perceptions 1

From the desk of Roy Roden: Each week I will be posting an overview of the teachings of the "Basic Training for the Gift of Prophecy” course we are doing in Belfast, Maine every Wednesday at 6:00pm.

Lesson #5 - “Spiritual Perceptions 1.”

Every person is endowed with the ability to hear from the Lord, but not everyone hears the same way. It is important to identify the way you hear that will enable you to become more sensitive to know when God is speaking.

There are four common ways that people perceive how God speaks to them. They are;

  • The “Seer”
  • The “Knower.”
  • The “Hearer.”
  • The “Feeler.”

Notice that each of these relate to the way that we are created. In other words, they are unique to the way in which we receive information and communicate. It is when these areas are anointed by the Holy, (sanctified) and we are sensitive to them, that they become a means for God to speak to us.

Basically, the seer sees things with prophetic vision, the knower internally just knows things, the hearer hears with their spiritual ears, and the feeler feels the things of God. These traits are common to every person. I call them your “Personal Indicators.”

Most people have one area more dominant than the others, but still operate in all four ways, which again are, the seer, the knower, the hearer and the feeler.

Which one can you relate to the best?

In this session we are going to cover the traits of the seer. Next week we will cover the traits of the knower and the hearer.

The Seer

The prophet Habakkuk said, “I will take my stand to SEE what He will Say to me” (Habakkuk 2:2). It was by “seeing” that which God showed to him, that revealed to Habakkuk what God was saying. God often speaks in images, such as by objects, pictures, art, colors and so on that enables us to “see” what He is saying. For example,

As King David gazed upon the heaven’s he declared in awe, “The heavens declare your glory and the firmaments your handiwork (Ps. 19:1).

Did David sense the Lord’s manifest presence speaking to him that awakened him to the handiwork of God’s creation?  Often God’s presence accompanies the very thing that we are “spiritually perceiving.”

All the primary ways God spoke to His people in Scripture continues today, such as through images, numbers and symbols that speaks volumes.

Consider the star of Bethlehem, what miraculous sign did this star speak off?  What purpose did it serve for the wise men traveling from the East?

We are all called to see. Jesus said, “Unless a man is born again, he cannot SEE the kingdom of God” (John 3:7).

Although all are called to see the things of the Kingdom, it is the way that we see that differs between God’s people.

There are those that see into the spiritual realm, such as through their natural eyes and their spirit. Although they may “see” into the realm of the spirit, does not make them a SEER, which is a prophet, “They were called Seers before they were called prophets” (1 Sam. 9:9).

Seeing into the spiritual realm is common by those with the gift of discerning of spirits. (See 1 Corinthians 12:10). They are “lookers” who like to peer into the realm of the spirit. We call this ability to see the unseen “prophetic vision.”

When speaking to them, they often see in mental images what you are saying.

They often “see” with the eyes of their spirit such as,

  • An open vision, a still image or a moving picture in their minds eye like a day dream.

  • The spiritual atmosphere in a room.

  • They may see something highlighted to them in the natural, or discern the presence of angels or the Holy Spirit as a light.

If you are in a room of seers, everyone is looking to “discern” each other. The young in the Lord and immature will do this, while the more mature will “look to see” what the Lord is saying and doing.

As a Biblical example of “seeing”, after Elisha received the mantle of Elijah, he traveled to Jericho. Seeing him afar off, the sons of the prophets said, “The spirit of Elijah rest upon Elisha” (2 Kings 2:15).

What did they see?  Was it a physical change about Elisha or was it a spiritual change they could see with their own eyes?

To create a balance, God often couples those who are “seers” with those that are management orientated (Administration) such as in business, marriages, ministry and so on.

Managers organize what is needed to bring about the change in order to bring into present reality that which the seer has seen.

What Do You See?

The Lord asked Jeremiah, “What do you see? And Jeremiah answered and said, “I see a rod of an almond tree.” And the Lord said, “You have seen well.”

What was is it about the symbol of the “almond rod” that Jeremiah saw that spoke to him?” (See Jeremiah 1:11-12, 5-10).

Prior to this vision, God told him that before he was born, he was ordained as a prophet to the Nations (Jerimiah 1:5). Could it be that this almond rod confirmed Jerimiah's call just as it did Aaron’s rod that blossomed confirming God’s choice for Aaron to be the high priest of Israel?

Now it came to pass the next day Moses went into the tabernacle of witness and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds (Numbers 17:8).

Time to Activate

This activation is called “What Do you See?” This is a homework exercise designed to help activate your “seers” gift.

Remember, all are called to see, it’s how YOU see (discern the things of God) that reveals your personal indicators.

Here we go… (This activation is also in your training manual)

  1. You will each be given a picture that is yours to keep. You might want to put your name on it.

  1. Now pair off with someone and exchange pictures with your partner.

  1. Take the picture home with you and read the article “What do you see - pictures as visual aids” in your training manual.

  1. As you look at the picture, “look to see” (perceive) what the Lord is saying that becomes a prophetic word for them?

  1. How did you discern or see this? Write this down in your prophetic journal as well as the prophetic word you have for them.

  1. Bring the picture along with the word you received at the next session to give to your partner. Until then, mum’s the word!
