Camden — Perhaps it should have been called the "Festival of Fitness" because so many healthy, fit people turned out to swim, bike and run — and run some more — during the Megunticook Race Festival on Saturday, Sept. 2.

The event, centered around Barrett's Cove at Megunticook Lake, included sprint and traditional Olympic-length triathlons, as well as a separate 5-kilometer road race.

A triathlon at the venue had been held annually for more than 35 years with Maine Sport and other sponsors.

The Olympic course featured a half-mile swim, 23.5-mile bike ride and 6.6-mile run. The course was open to individuals and teams. The sprint course, open to individuals only, included a one-third-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3.5-mile run.

Interestingly, Scott Layton, 41, of Rockport was the director of the event and talked to competitors before he went out and finished first in the Olympic-length triathlon, as he had previously, in 1:50:46.6 — 11:08 swim time, 58:14 bike and 39:47 run.

Kendra Emery, 38, of Rockport was the first female finisher in 2:09:55.8 — 11:28, 1:10:26 and 46:00.

There were 29 participants in the Olympic-length event.

The event also saw Parker Johnson, 58, of Lincolnville keep his impressive streak alive as he has participated in all of the triathlons at the venue for more than three-and-a-half-decades.

In the sprint triathlon, which attracted 50 finishers, Robert Fast, 55, of Cumberland was first in 1:03:55.9 — 8:34, 31:26, 22:04. The first female finisher was Mara Crans, 51, of Camden at 1:14:09.1 — 8:48, 36:13 and 26:46.

In the Horch Roofing Labor Day 5K, Bruce Schwab finished first in 20:25.6, while Ella Genasci Smith was the first female to cross the course in 22:32.1.

The event was geared for all members of the family and took place during Camden’s Windjammer Weekend.

The event was sponsored by local businesses. In addition to Horch Roofing as the 5K sponsor, the 70.3 sponsors included: SideCountry Sports, PenBay Veterinary Associates, Pen Bay Medical Center and Waldo County General Hospital and Bixby & Co. The Olympic sponsors are FireOcean Fitness Multisport Coaching, Bangor Savings Bank, Hedstrom Electric, Oh Yeah Comfy Chair and A&E Stoneworks. The sprint level sponsor was Bay Chiropractic.

Funds raised from the Megunticook Race Festival benefited the charitable organization, One Community Many Voices (OCMV), a 501c3 based in Rockland.

OCMV believes potentials and dreams have no deadlines. Using a model called: the Art of Good Fellowship — Paying it Forward One Neighbor at a Time, OCMV works with its Midcoast neighbors to help craft their destinies by providing small boosts that unlock their own skills and potentials, to create possibilities. OCMV meets people where they are at and works with individuals/families to achieve a dream or overcome a temporary barrier in order to regain financial sustainability, self-confidence, and/or a healthy lifestyle.

Maine Sport Outfitters of Rockport hosted a triathlon at the venue for more than three decades. Other Midcoast sprint triathlons, such as ones hosted by the Penobscot Bay and Waldo County YMCAs, have discontinued in recent years.
