Rockland — The Latvian Ladies of Maine will prepare a traditional dinner to celebrate Latvian Independence Day Nov. 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., topped off with a traditional Latvian birthday sweetbread. The event will be held at the Penobscot Language School, 28 Gay Street.

One of the Baltic states in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, The Republic of Latvia declared its independence on Nov. 18, 1918, in the aftermath of World War I, following centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule.

This cultural event, in addition to delicious Latvian foods, will provide a presentation on Latvian culture and music, a bit of history, and a few brief refugee stories by Latvian neighbors of the midcoast community. Entrance fee is $35 per person.
