Aug 29, 2014
Carol Latta’s mixed media painting of Spartan, a Herreshoff New York 50-foot sloop, is part of her work featured in September in Rockport’s Barb Jackson Gallery.

Rockport — Carol Latta will be the featured artist of the month for September at the Barb Jackson Gallery, 22 Central St. in the village, between Shepherd's Pie and Salt Water Farm. There will be an open house for Latta at the gallery Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at the event, which is open to the public.

Latta was born and educated in Michigan, where she began painting and photography at age 12. Although she first majored in art in college, she ultimately graduated with honors from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1970. She worked as a Registered Nurse and raised a family before moving to Maine in 1997. Here, she has been inspired to devote herself to both photography and painting.

Latta spends most of her summers on the family’s yawl, the Carol Lyn. She photographs the magnificent Maine coast with its villages, islands, harbors, coves and classic sailing yachts and “These inspirational photographs feed my passion to paint during the winter.” For more about her and her work, visit

Also showing are Barb Jackson and Liz Donald. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
