Rockland — The first time Oceanside and Camden Hills met on the hardwood in the 2021 pandemic-altered season, Mariner Cam Kingsbury and Windjammer Jeremy Fraser, both seniors, dueled in the second half, point for point, as the visitors topped the hosts 66-62 on Friday, Jan. 22 in Rockport.

Nearly a month later to the day, the rematch on Wednesday night, Feb. 23, took a different turn, as no one player stood out above the rest on either high school boys hoop squad, but, instead, the Windjammers and Mariners got balanced offensive and defensive team showings.

The game changed hands throughout, with the largest lead seven points in favor of the hosts, but the Windjammers made late free throws — as part of an 8-1 run — to pull ahead, and ice the victory 57-52.

The victory bumped Camden Hills to 8-2, while Oceanside's record mirrors the Windjammers, as the end of the regular season closes in.

On Tuesday, Oceanside led 16-12 after one quarter, but Camden Hills took the edge at halftime 33-31, while the Mariners regained control 43-41 after three stanzas. The competitive game included eight lead changes and nine ties.

Fraser led the Windjammers with 14 points, while Hunter Norton added 13; Aidan Schecter, 11; Ryan Clifford, seven; and Westen DeWaard and Casey Messer, six. Messer and Schecter netted three-pointers for the visitors.

Additional statistics for Camden Hills were unavailable.

Everett Allyn (18 points, 9 rebounds) paced Oceanside, while Cam Kingsbury (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists), Bodhi Ames (9 points, 7 rebounds), Elliot Lucier (5 points, 3 rebounds), Nathan Coombs (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Carter Galley (2 points, rebound, steal) played key roles. Kingsbury and Lucier hit treys for the hosts.

Camden Hills was 13-of-16 (81 percent) from the foul line, while Oceanside was 10-of-18 (55 percent).

The first three minutes of the contest saw the foes trade baskets before the Mariners' offensive momentum picked up.

After an Ames rainbow shot fell over Clifford, Kingsbury hit a shot from the right elbow to push Oceanside ahead for the first time, 8-6.

Fraser tied the game with two free throws, but Lucier reclaimed the advantage for the Mariners with a field goal off the backboard as he fell out of bounds.

Lucier kept the momentum up when he corralled a rebound, fired down the court to Allyn, who made the field goal, to push the Mariner advantage to 12-8.

Norton grabbed an offensive rebound for the Windjammers and got the putback to fall, to cut the visitors' deficit to two, but Kingsbury buried his lone three to cap an 11-4 Mariner run late in the opening stanza.

The second quarter saw the teams go on offensive runs, and Oceanside increased its lead, as Ames made a field goal in the low post, with the foul, and completed the three-point play.

On the next offensive possession, Kingsbury found Ames for another basket as the hosts' lead increased to 23-18, but Clifford answered on the other end as he crossed the paint from left to right and scooped a layup off the glass with his right hand, over the outstretched hand of Ames.

Kingsbury copied Clifford on the next Mariner possession, as he scooped his own layup, with his right hand, off the glass, and then Carter Galley stole the ball at midcourt and scored, to give Oceanside the largest lead of the game, 27-20.

Camden answered, though, as DeWaard made two free throws and Fraser got his putback to fall after two Windjammer offensive rebounds.

Allyn got his own offensive putback to drop on the other end, before DeWaard found Messer for a trey with 2:08 left in the half to cut Oceanside's edge to 29-27. Allyn again answered for the Mariners, but Fraser muscled his way into Allyn's chest with his left shoulder to create separation, and hit a jumper.

DeWaard stole the ball at midcourt and found a streaking Messer for a layup to tie the game 31-31. Schecter gave the Windjammers the advantage with an inside basket to complete a 13-4 Windjammer run to the end the first half.

The Mariners held a two-point edge late in the fourth quarter, but much like Oceanside did in the first clash between the area athletic rivals on Jan. 22, the Windjammers had the comeback in them this time around.

Fraser netted two free throws with 2:57 left to tie the score 51-51, then, after two missed Mariner field goals, Norton cleaned up Messer's miss to push Camden Hills ahead 53-51 with 1:24 to play.

After a Windjammer timeout, and Mariner missed field goals, DeWaard fired a fullcourt pass to Fraser, who was fouled in his layup attempt, and he made both free throws with a minute left.

As the seconds ticked away, the hosts missed two three-point attempts, but corralled a second offensive rebound, which resulted in Kingsbury being fouled.

Kingsbury made the front end of a 1-and-1 situation, while the visitors grabbed the rebound and made the final free throws to ice the game.
