Rep. Walter Kumiega is projected as winner of House District 36 and will return to the state house for another term. Kim Strauss, a Republican from Tremont, was defeated in his bid against Kumiega.

House District 36 serves the towns of Brooklin, Deer Isle, Frenchboro, Isle au Haut, part of Mount Desert, North Haven, Stonington, Swan's Island, Tremont and Vinalhaven.

Knox County voters overwhelmingly supported Kumiega with more than 70 percent of the vote — 692 votes — while Strauss received about 27 percent — 257 votes — according to numbers provided by Bangor Daily News.

Kumiega has previously served on the Marine Resources and Engrossed Bills committees.

Kumiega graduated high school in 1980 and has since taken a handful of continuing education courses. He is a carpenter who originally grew up in a small town in Western Massachusetts called Granby. Kumiega has lived in Deer Isle and Little Deer Isle for 18 years. He is married and has two teenage children.
