Knox County Art Society, Art Loft join forces with director appointment

Nov 07, 2019
David and Paula Blanchard

Midcoast — The Art Loft has named David Blanchard, a Camden resident for nearly 30 years, its new director. Now retired, his career included executive, management and development positions in a variety of nonprofits. He will be volunteering his time and expertise to help the Art Loft continue its service to the community. He assumes his new duties Jan. 1, 2020.

David, himself an avocational visual artist, established and managed artist Ron Frontin’s ongoing oil painting classes in Thomaston (still ongoing), and began and has been running life drawing sessions in Camden since 2014. In March of this year, he founded the Knox County Art Society (KCAS), whose mission is complementary to the Art Loft's.

While he continues to develop KCAS, David will also be donating his time, energy and expertise to broadening the base of support for the Art Loft. Central to his strategy is blending together the activities of the two organizations, which share the goal of supporting the community of visual artists in Rockland and the surrounding communities, from beginners to the more accomplished.

David will be ably assisted in these efforts by his wife and collaborator, Paula Blanchard. She brings expertise in marketing, communications, and print and online publications — skills she honed in a career that spanned both the private and nonprofit sectors, including many years in administrative posts at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA). She is particularly excited about helping to make opportunities for artistic growth more accessible to all. Paula is also part-time publicist for the Belfast Garden Club.

The mission of KCAS is to support visual artists of all ages by creating face-to-face opportunities for learning, collaboration and the exchange of ideas, resources, and skills. The mission of the Art Loft is to enrich the local community through arts and education, with the aim of making art accessible to everyone regardless of income, age, or prior experience.
