Kigel shows in Portland, Kennebunk

Jun 03, 2014
“Rhododendron with Bachelor Button” is a watercolor by Jean Kigel of Waldoboro.

Asian brush paintings by Waldoboro artist Jean Kigel will be featured this month in both Portland and Kennebunk. Both shows open with public receptions Friday, June 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The free catered reception at Art Collector Maine's Gallery 75, Suite 203 of 75 Market St., is part of Portland's Friday Night Art Walk-and-Congress Street Closure, which, this month, kicks off Portland's Old Port Festival.

A Maine native and specialist in Asian brush painting and gyotaku monoprinting, Kigel paints with energy and passion; most notable are her interpretations of perennial flowers, landscapes and sea creatures. This show includes a meticulously painted still life of persimmon in a blue dragon vase from a pagoda she visited while touring China with the Maine College of Art. In addition, viewers will find lotus and orchids from Florida’s water gardens; plum blossoms from Japan; and a large, whimsically colored small-mouthed bass from Maine.

Kigel’s show will run to June 23, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gallery 75's multi-artist event continues all year during art walks, during office hours and by appointment (772-3373).

Also running to June 23 and open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily is “ART.WORKS,” an Art Collector Maine-curated show of 50 artists, at 39 Western Ave., Kennebunk, part of Art Collector Maine’s Kennebunkport Festival. Kigel has three watercolors in this group show.
