Art Loft’s June artist

Kelly finds freedom in art

Paintings by Melissa Kelly are displayed in June at The Art Loft in Rockland.

Rockland — The Art Loft will show works by Melissa Kelly, the artist in residence for the month of June, beginning with a First Friday Art Walk reception June 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. The downtown community art center is located on the lobby level of the Thorndike Building, 385 Main St., Suite 9.

Kelly is an artist and art therapist with a private practice in Rockport. She views art as a powerful tool to express and process emotions and tap into the subconscious. After completing her education in fine arts, she felt so overburdened with the pressure to follow the “rules” of art that it stifled her creativity. As she pursued a career in art therapy, observing clients interact with the art materials reminded her of what she loves about art — the risk-taking and innovation.

Most of Kelly’s paintings start with some paint splatters, and she often creates “a huge mess” before themes emerge that pertain to motherhood, relationships, loss and love.

“Finding my creative voice has been a powerful and healing experience. My hopes are that these paintings speak to individuals on a deeply personal level and inspire other people to find ways to feel connected and understood through art,” she said.

Kelly will lead The Art of Taking Risks workshops Monday, June 4, and Tuesday, June 12,from 10:30 a.m. to noon; and Thursday, June 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is free to members, $20 drop-in for non-members. For more information, email, call 200-7915 or visit
