Oakland — Camden Hills goalie Lucas Boetsch will be the correct answer for an obscure trivia question years down the road.

The question, of course, would be: “Who scored the first goal of the 2017 season for the Windjammers?"

In the team’s opener on Friday, Sept. 1 on the road against Messalonskee of Oakland, Boetsch booted a free kick from “65 yards that clanged off the back of the iron,” said Camden Hills' coach Ryan Hurley — and into the net.

The visitors added two more goals on the afternoon, and, ultimately, kicked off the season in style with a 3-0 win over the Eagles.

"After a long and challenging preseason it was great to get started tonight and the boys played great,” said Hurley. “Messalonskee plays hard and is always a tough opponent at their home field and today was no exception. The effort from our team was outstanding.”

Quinn Brown added a first-half goal for Camden Hills — which led 2-0 at halftime — while Marshall Merriam added a highlight-reel goal in the second when he creased the net on a bicycle kick.

Ben Owre also logged an assist for the visitors.

Boetsch made seven saves on seven shots in the Windjammer goal and Dawson Charles had 10 saves on 15 shots for the Eagles.
