This week's pet pick is a fabulous dog named Charlotte. Quite honestly, we cannot figure out why she is still with us at the shelter. Charlotte is a 2-year old terrier mix with hugs to spare. She is joyful, playful and full of energy, be it with her people or other dogs. Would you like the perfect hiking, running, biking partner? Charlotte might be your girl. As active as she is, Charlotte also loves down time. Hanging out in a comfy dog bed or beside you on the couch would suit her to a tee.

There are dogs and cats of every shape and size waiting for their perfect home, but sometimes we aren't exactly sure what that might be. Because shelter behavior can be totally different from home behavior, what seems like the perfect match may not always be so. In trying to make happy, lifelong matches for our residents, we offer a slumber party week. This is our foster-to-adopt program, and it has been extremely successful. By giving the foster family and the pet an opportunity to get to know one another away from the shelter it allows for a more relaxed transition. There is no failed slumber party. If it is a good match, we complete the adoption. If it is not the right fit, we learn more about the dog or cat in a home setting. The foster family actually becomes part of helping us to find the perfect home for the pet.

Many of the animals presently at the shelter are of the tiny, feline variety. You guessed it, it's kitten season. We have kittens in house, in foster and waiting to be born. If you are searching for a little love in your life, stop in and see who we have available. We suggest getting an application in for pre-approval to make the process easier.

The month of July is a great time to stock up on reusable shopping bags at Shaw’s. Shaw’s has chosen Pope Memorial for its “Give Back Where It Counts” bag program for July. PMHS will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable “Give Back Where It Counts” bag is sold in the Rockland store. So help save the environment and support the shelter at the same time.

Topping our wish list this week is paper towels and 33-gallon garbage bags. (Charlotte says it’s because the kittens are so messy!).
