Hope — John E. Winsper, 69, of Hope, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, after years of declining health.

John was born Aug. 21, 1951, in New Bedford, Mass., to the late Joseph A. Winsper and Elsie R. (Costa) Winsper. John fondly remembered the time he spent living on Martha's Vineyard after attending Stonehill College. The slower pace and beauty of coastal Maine led him to purchase land in Hope in 1978, which he called home for the next 40 years.

John was a talented and hardworking carpenter, woodworker and jack of all trades. In his free time, John enjoyed building and sailing model boats, listening to his beloved James Taylor, horticulture, good food and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Bicycling with his brother Jim, from Hope to Florida, in his much younger years provided for many stories and reminders of how times have changed.

If you had the pleasure of getting to know him and see past his at-times gruff exterior, we hope you will remember him for his generosity and kindness.

John is survived by his daughters Alexandra Winsper and her partner, Ethan Chase, and Dale Winsper and her partner, Alexander Merrifield; grandchildren Gage, Carter and Emma; siblings Joseph Winsper Jr., Kathleen Saulnier, Rosemary Winsper, Louise Abrantes, Elaine Hunt and James Winsper; and many nieces and nephews.

John’s family has decided to remember his life privately at this time.
