Gainesville, Fla. — Mary Jean Moore Campbell, 95, widow of Donald S. Campbell, formerly of Stratford, Conn., and Tenants Harbor, died peacefully at E.T. York Hospice Care Center in Gainesville, Florida, July 19, 2018. She was born in Belington, W.Va., May 5, 1923, the daughter of Joseph C. and Mary Ann (Nicholson) Moore, both of whom predeceased her.

She grew up in Carnegie, Pa., where she attended school, graduating from Carnegie High School in 1940 and from Pittsburgh Academy. She worked as a clerk for the Colonial Trust Co. of Pittsburgh and Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of Carnegie.

She and her husband were married in the Carnegie United Presbyterian Church Oct. 25, 1944, while he was serving in the Naval Reserve. Upon his discharge in 1946, they settled in Stratford, Conn., where they raised their three children and for 25 years she served as secretary of the Stratford United Methodist Church, where she was a life member of the United Methodist Women. She was also active in the PTA and was leader of a Brownie troop for five years.

Jean and her husband both retired in 1985 and moved to Tenants Harbor, where they loved living on the coast and continued to enjoy sailing. For many years, she was a volunteer at the Jackson Memorial Library there.

In 2014 Jean and Don made their last big move together to Gainesville, Fla., where Jean enjoyed the warm climate, the beautiful flowers and the welcoming environment of The Village Senior Living Community. There, Jean was an active member of the weekly knitting and crocheting group.

Through the years, Jean received much pleasure from her children, her grandchildren and her cats. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sailing, doing counted cross-stitch, working crossword puzzles, gardening and bird-watching. She was a woman who loved life, loved people, and lived life to the fullest. She loved sunny days, but when the sun didn't shine, she said, “We’ll just have to make our own sunshine,” and she did!

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, her brother John N. Moore, son-in-law Edward L. Black, and by grandson Daryll Paquette.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Margaret Black of Tenants Harbor, Marsha Capinera and husband John of Gainesville, Fla., and Donald Jr. (Scott) and wife Judy of Morrisonville, N.Y.; and her grandchildren: Brent Black of Warren, Tyson and David Black of Tenants Harbor, Erica Jean Fox of Winter Garden, Fla., Erin Campbell of Peru, N.Y., and Ann Campbell of Austin, Texas, Sarah Jo Paquette of Ellenburg, N.Y., and Justin Paquette of Schenectady, N.Y. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret (Skip) Moore of West Allis, Wis.; godchild Candace Houck Hachmann of Clarkston, Wash.; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be no calling hours. A small memorial reception will be held for her neighbors at The Village this week. A memorial service will take place in Maine at a later date. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Jackson Memorial Library, 71 Main St., Tenants Harbor, ME 04860; the Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main St., Stratford, CT 06615; Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606; or the charity of their choice.
