Peachtree City, Ga. — Mrs. Jean Carol Stratton Read, age 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at home at Somerby. She was born Aug. 27, 1936, to Rupert and Glenna Stratton of Rockland. As a toddler, she was nicknamed “Diddy” by her dad, who was the local dentist in town and the light of her life.

Diddy led a storybook life, growing up near the ocean in Maine, with her older brother, Bruce, and younger siblings, Peter and Patty. After graduating from Rockland High School, Diddy sought her teaching degree at University of Maine. Upon graduation, she headed to Boston and attended dental hygiene school at Forsyth, the women’s division of Tufts. With diploma in hand, Diddy went home to Rockland and worked in her father’s practice. It was in the dental chair she met her husband, David Hawes Read. Together they had two children, Deborah and Gregory Read.

After her kids were grown, Diddy spent exciting years in the Netherlands Antilles working for a touring company and selling time-share property. Eventually, she returned to the States to settle in Florida, near her son, Greg, and enjoyed her time as a grandmother.

Diddy lit up the room with her genuine smile and big blue eyes. She loved to play the piano, sing, dance and play board games. She never knew a stranger and was always happy to give a hug. She kept up with her sweet sister and many other family and friends by making homemade cards and texting on her iPhone. She was blessed to be loved by so many wonderful people.

Diddy’s daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Kurt Johnson, of Peachtree City, Ga., her son, Gregory Read, of Florida; her five grandchildren, Kiersten, Kylee and William Johnson and Jason and Kelly Read; sister Patricia Peterson of Clinton Conn.; brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Sandra Stratton of Rockland, brother and sister-in-law Peter and Carol Stratton of Boothbay Harbor, and sister-in-law Clara Read of Bristol, R.I., survive her.

There will be a celebration of Diddy’s life in Rockland in July 2018.
