Tenants Harbor — On Feb. 8, 2020 the world got a little smaller as Janice Bass Swain’s spirit left her body. Jan was surrounded by love, caring thoughts and memories of her 70 years on this earth.

Jan stood strong against many health issues in the past 10 years, finally losing her battle to a recent cancer diagnosis that quickly spread throughout her body.

Jan was born July 27, 1949, as one of four children born to Carroll and Ruby Bass in Ketchikan, Alaska, where she lived until she was 19 years of age.

In her early twenties, Jan’s adventurous spirit guided her from Ketchikan to the coast of Maine where she built her home and raised her family along the shores of Tenants Harbor. Jan cherished long-term friendships, family values and delighted in the fresh air and clean waters of the outdoors.

A social butterfly, Jan was known for being the first person to arrive at a gathering or celebration and her infectious laugh would carry the conversation long into the night.

Jan enjoyed music, dancing, gardening and cooking her favorite foods, making sure that any visitors to her home were well cared for and that culinary treats were always plentiful.

Jan will be missed by all who have been touched by her smile and by her outgoing personality.

Jan is survived by her husband, Carl Swain, her two sons Eben and Joel and her siblings and many nieces, nephews and cousins still residing in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Jan was such a nice person.  I enjoyed cutting her hair for many years but had not seen her in a very long time.  She had a wonderful attitude and it was always a pleasure to see. Glad to have known her.
