Tracy, Calif. — Jacqueline Delores Bates-Van Hagen, age 82, was born into eternity March 4, 2018, surrounded by her family in prayer. Jacqueline, affectionately known as Jackie, was born July 23, 1935, in Worcester, Mass., and was raised in Rockland. Attending a weekly dance in Rockland, Jackie Bates met her future husband, Ron Van Hagen, while he was stationed there with the Coast Guard. After their first meeting, they danced the rest of the night together, then decided to meet at the dance hall every Saturday night and soon fell in love. They married Oct. 25, 1952. When his service ended, they made their home in Tracy, Calif., his hometown. There they raised their two children, Ronald and Cynthia.

Jacqueline’s greatest joy and pride came from the beautiful family she created. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren filled her days with fun and laughter. She had the gift of a green thumb and had a beautiful yard to prove it. Jacqueline spent hours each day in her yard meticulously caring for her pristine flowerbeds and lawn. She loved to have her hands in the soil and considered it her therapy. Another highlight was her weekly lunches with various groups of friends, socializing, laughing and reminiscing. In later years, you could count on her to be sitting in her chair on her driveway greeting people as they walked or drove by with a friendly smile and wave.

Jacqueline’s loyal little companion, her rescue terrier, Abby, was always by her side or in her lap. Being from the East Coast, she frequently reminded everyone that the lobster out here in California wasn’t the real deal. She was a seafood snob and was proud of it! She always considered Maine her true home. She will be remembered for her generous heart, acts of kindness toward both her family and perfect strangers, her sense of humor and spirited personality.

Jacqueline is already greatly missed by her family, son Ronald Van Hagen and his wife, Juanita; daughter Cynthia San Julian and her husband, Gary; grandson Matthew Van Hagen and his wife, Lisa, granddaughter Mia Hicks and her husband, Brian, granddaughter Ali Odom and her husband, Lucas, grandson Ronnie Van Hagen, granddaughter Briana Van Hagen and her brother, Francis Bates. She is also survived by her adored great-grandchildren, Hadley Van Hagen, Jax Odom and Riley Hicks. Other survivors include her nephew, Anthony Bates.

Greeting her in heaven was her husband, Ronald Van Hagen, parents Harold and Rena, sister Betty Cairns and her nephew David Bates.

A private service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church March 16. Donations in Jacqueline’s name can be made to Pup’s Rescue, 3869 Silvana Lane, Stockton, CA 95212 or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1635 Chester Drive, Tracy, CA 95376.
