Islanders possess depth, experience, eye playoff surge

By Staff | Sep 03, 2017

Vinalhaven — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Vinalhaven/North Haven girls soccer team:

Coach/years coached current team: Susan Philbrook, 14th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 5-7, seventh in Class D South. The No. 7 islanders lost to No. 10 Rangeley 4-1 in a preliminary playoff game.

Roster: Seniors Cheyenne Bickford, Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes, Paige Dennison, Déja Doughty, Carolyn Hopkins and Ashlyn Littlefield; junior Marina Davis; sophomores Justice Grant and Hannah Newton; freshman Dreyann Osgood; and eighth-graders Hope Cluff, Kaylee Grant, Myra Mills and Jazmyn Robishaw.

Known graduation loss: Rosanna Morel.

Significant impact athletes: Davis-Oakes and Doughty.

Team strengths: Depth and experience.

Team goals: To return to the Class D South playoffs.

Top league opponent: Richmond.

Outlook: It would be tough for this season to not top last year for the islanders as they played five games last season with fewer than the normal 11 players. Now, after losing only one senior and having an influx of eighth-graders, Vinalhaven/North Haven will, at the least, have the luxury of being able to substitute players this season.

Davis-Oakes returns to play goal after a year off (she broke her leg in preseason last year), which will allow Davis to return to help out on the pitch.

Philbrook said Doughty should be a prominent goal scorer, while Osgood and Cluff also provide should offense for the islanders.
