Augusta — Two island teams crossed Penobscot Bay via ferry on Thursday, Jan. 2 and trekked up Route 17 to the state’s capital city in the hope to begin 2020 on an upward trend.

And, by day’s end, the mainland vistors — North Haven girls and Vinalhaven boys — headed home with the same number of victories they had hours prior as they fell to Forest Hills of Jackman at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Viking boys were downed by the defending state Class D champions — and top-ranked team in Class D South — 88-41, while the Hawk girls dropped a close 32-27 decision to the Tigers.
