Belfast — With one game going down to the wire and the other a base hit from ending via mercy rule, it proved a banner day on the diamonds for the Belfast baseball and softball teams on Wednesday afternoon, May 9, as the Lions hosted Medomak Valley of Waldoboro.

Lion softball plated a pair of runs late and swung to a 2-1 victory over the Panthers, while Lion baseball swung to an 11-2 triumph.

Belfast 2, Medomak Valley 1

At Belfast May 9, the Lions rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth inning and knocked off the Panthers. Medomak Valley’s lone score game in the fifth inning.

Leading the Lions at the plate were Olivia Lovejoy (single, run), Grace Fitzjurls (single), Emma Mehuren (single), Kayci Faulkingham (double, run) and Maya Cunningham (2 doubles, 2 RBIs).

For the Panthers, Addie Jameson (2 singles), Gabby DePatsy (2 singles), Aubrey Schaeffer (single), Hallie Kunesh (single, run), Sadie Cohen (2 singles), Cheyenne Nash (single) and Lydia Simmons (2 singles) paced the offense.

Brooke Richards pitched for Belfast, as she allowed 10 hits and five walks, with 10 strikeouts. Addie Jameson pitched for Medomak Valley, as she finished with six hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts.

The Panthers had a bevy of scoring opportunities throughout the game, as the visitors left 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the second and third innings.

In the second inning, Medomak Valley had the bases loaded with no outs before the next two batters were retired. Emily Wotton then connected on what would have been a base hit up the middle, but a Panther runner was called for interference and declared out, which ended the scoring threat.

The Lions left two runners on base on the afternoon.

The visitors broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Kunesh laced a single and was knocked home by Simmons, who had an infield single and reached third on a throwing error, which allowed Kunesh to score.

But the Lions responded in the bottom of the sixth when Lovejoy reached on a bunt single and Faulkingham's double put two runners in scoring position.

That set the table for Cunningham, who ripped a two-run double for what proved the game-winning runs.

Tyler Bartlett eventually came in on a balk, while Davis plated a run on a groundout to make the score 9-2.
