In road match for rivals, Mariners edge Panthers in indoor court affair

By Staff | May 08, 2017

Damariscotta — The Medomak Valley girls tennis team hoped for a bit of revenge against rival Oceanside on Friday, May 5 in a match moved indoors — due to the seemingly non-stop rain in the area — to the Central Lincoln County YMCA.

However, the Panthers, who were downed by the Mariners in a Class B North prelim playoff match last season, again saw Oceanside hold serve for the win, this time a 3-2 decision.

The Midcoast athletic rivals also hit the road for the match, as the visiting Panthers stayed much closer to home in Damariscotta.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Maggie Ryan beat Gabby Simmons, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; Hannah Smith lost to Molly Davis, 2-6, 2-6; and Claire Bourett lost to Cassidy Boynton, 1-6, 0-6.

In doubles, Chelsea Ripley and Katie Ryan lost to Emma Lee and Jasmine Bouchard, 0-6, 1-6; and Serena Poland and Molly Taylor beat Erin Dugan and Risya Philbrook, 7-5, 6-2.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (3-2, 6.1111 points) is 10th and Medomak Valley (1-4, 0.8333 points) is 14th. Camden Hills (5-0, 47.5000 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
