Rockport — If there are certain things Oceanside opponents have come to realize — in crystal-clear fashion, no doubt — they are that the Mariners can beat a foe in a variety of effective and efficient ways.

All of which Camden Hills witnessed up close and personal on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 23 in high school girls basketball play.

The visiting Mariners put on a court clinic, looked especially sharp in all facets of the game and displayed their immense and varied skills throughout the quickly-played, 32-minute affair.

Oceanside again proved it could beat an opponent using a potent inside-outside game, as well as dagger-like three-point sharpshooting, one of its favorite methods of overwhelming foes.

Oh, and the Mariners can run with the best of them, using the fast break, especially off turnovers, to create easy points.

They also usually shoot accurately from the foul line, two-point areas and beyond the arc.

And, of course, Oceanside can play sturdy defense on an individual and team level. And that aggressive defense always gives the Mariners more opportunities with the ball, a bad development for opponents.

Using all their tools on Tuesday, the Mariners bolted to a 16-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 50-16 win over the host Windjammers, who had played well and shown tremendous improvement in recent weeks.

However, the Mariners, ironically with only one senior (Grace Woodman), have played at another level, especially the past couple of weeks.

Oceanside improved to 10-0 during this pandemic-altered, regionally- and county-based season, while the Windjammers, who also lost to Oceanside 47-38 earlier in the campaign, dropped to 2-8.

In Tuesday's game, the Mariners scored the first 16 points and allowed the Windjammers only six points deep into the third stanza.

Oceanside led 16-2, 28-4 and 38-9 at the quarter breaks.

The Mariners were paced by Audrey Mackie with 17 points, while Anna Kingsbury added 13. Additionally, Ahlivia Morris added nine points; Abby Waterman, seven; Emily Sykes and Jillian Barnard, two.

Oceanside netted 10-of-11 free throws (91 percent) and six trifectas, including three from Kingsbury, two from Mackie and one from Morris.

The Mariners got seven points from Mackie, four from Waterman, trey from Kingsbury and two foul shots from Morris to take a 16-0 advantage in the first quarter. A hoop in the final seconds by Anna Jordan got the hosts on the board in the first eight minutes.

For Camden Hills, Molly Hixon netted eight points, including the team's lone trey, while Jordan and Lily Clement scored four. The Windjammers converted on 5-of-13 foul shots (38 percent).

Additionally for the Mariners, Woodman (4 rebounds, 5 steals), Mackie (3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals), Waterman (9 rebounds, 10 steals, 2 blocked shots), Kingsbury (6 rebounds, 3 steals), Morris (5 steals) and Natalie Hitz (4 rebounds) turned in strong statistical performances.

This season, Oceanside has outscored opponents 579-343 (57.9-34.3 per game), as the Mariners have netted a high of 70 points twice and scored in the 60s four times.

Given the Mariners' stellar play and overall talent, it would have been fun to see what they could have accomplished at the regional — and perhaps even the state tournament — level in a traditional court campaign.
