The Benchwarmers won the pivotal game 4-0.

Waldoboro — There was an adult coed softball championship on the line Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30 on a cool, sun-splashed Medomak Valley High School field and that meant one thing — namely, stalwarts Knox County Benchwarmers and South of the Border were scheduled for their seemingly annual clash of the diamond titans.

Such has become the norm these days — and years — in the popular fall recreational league hosted by the Waldoboro Recreation Department.

When it comes to title pedigrees, Benchwarmers and South of the Border annually possess the talent and desire to finish ahead of the pack.

That has happened often in recent years as Benchwarmers and South of the Border obviously get a competitive kick out of standing toe-to-toe on the field in an unwavering quest for another title.

In fact, for the fourth time in five years, those opponents were the final two teams standings with a crown on the line as they again met on the diamond to conclude the fall season.

That happened on Sunday as No. 1 Benchwarmers bested No. 2 South of the Border 4-0 in the championship game — about an hour or so after South of the Border had forced a winner-take-all finale with a 12-3 victory.

This fall, the Benchwarmers finished 15-2 overall, including 4-1 in the playoffs. South of the Border ended 14-4-1 overall, including 5-2 in the postseason.

The Benchwarmers, who also annually battle for the Camden Adult Coed Softball League crown in the summer and Rockland Adult Dodgeball League title in the winter, won their second Waldoboro coed softball title in seven years and have finished as runners-up three times.

Additionally, South of the Border has captured six league championships and finished second five times in 12 years.

Knox County Benchwarmers include Lee Smith, Becca Smith, Jordan Carter, Robin Botley, Sara Cullity, Tim Jackson, Lenny Wedge, Chris Burns, Danny Favreau, Jay Young, Betsy Wedge, Kim Young, Dylan Maloney, Jessica Vellieux and Jason Yates. The Smiths are husband and wife, Wedges mother and son and Youngs father and daughter. Lilly Smith is the team manager.

South of the Border includes Carlos Arteaga, Ashley Geel, Erin Chase, Taylor Williamson, Jared Simmons, Steven York, Andrea Williamson, Jeremy Byrd, Sarah Cowen, Mike Jameson, Micah Williamson, Dwayne Neubig, Andrew Simmons, Eric Hunt, Gordon Simmons and Mike Young. Taylor and Micah Williamson are brothers and Andrea Williamson is their stepmother. The Simmonses also are related.

Burns and Jameson pitched the final two games for their teams. Botley had a key home run early in the final game to jump-start Benchwarmers, who then used strong defense — and another home run from Jackson — to keep powerful South of the Border off the board en route to a 4-0 victory.

Earlier in the double-elimination playoffs, Benchwarmers edged South of the Border 6-4 in a winner's bracket contest.

Complete stats for the final two playoff games for South of the Border were unavailable, but it is known the team slugged several home runs to win the first "championship" game and force the do-or-die finale.

For Benchwarmers in the first of two final games, Veilleux (2 singles, run), Jay Young (triple, run, RBI), Jackson (single, RBI), Cullity (2 singles), Burns (triple, run) and Lenny Wedge (single, RBI) led the charge.

In the championship game, Carter (2 singles, 2 runs), Botley (single, home run), Yates (single), Veilleux (RBI), Jay Young (double), Jackson (home run), Maloney (single), Favreau (single) and Lenny Wedge (single) keyed the offense.

The two-day double-elimination playoff tournament swung in Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30. The postseason games were played at Medomak Valley High School, Medomak Middle School and Clyde Sukeforth Field.

The final regular-season standings were: Knox County Benchwarmers 11-1, South of the Border 9-2-1, Lil’ Truckahs 8-4, American Arboriculture 7-4-1, High Tek Rednecks 7-5, Free Press Redwings 6-6, B52’s 5-6-1, Bench Jockeys 5-7, Empty Pitchers 3-9, Hammerheads 2-9-1 and Mainly Pawn 1-11.

During the regular season, Benchwarmers outscored opponents 173-64, while South of the Border outscored foes 114-42.

An end-of-the-season meeting between Benchwarmers and South of the Border has become a common occurrence as the squads strive for excellence and a consistent high level of play
