Rockport — The former Helm restaurant, frequented by Midcoast diners for half a century, is for sale for the first time in three decades.

The 141 Commercial St. property was built in 1960 on a lot of less than two acres.

"The Helm Restaurant is an extremely established restaurant and has been in the same ownership for 32 years," the Camden Real Estate website states. "Fantastic visibility on Route 1 situated between Camden and Rockport."

As of Jan. 8, the asking price was $595,000, with annual property taxes estimated at $6,576. Rockport tax maps list the current owner as Louise Grimmel.

Grimmel could not be reached for comment.

Since it opened in the late '60s, the Helm offered a variety of traditional seafood dishes and traditional American cuisine in its dining room, which boasted one of the largest salad bars in the area. Customers looking for a bite to go or a soft-serve ice cream cone made use of the take-out window.

The last posts made on the Helm's Facebook page were made by a diner in May of 2017, who photographed his meal of "blue cheese haddock with Ritz cracker topping." But the restaurant has been closed for many months -- evidenced by the fact that its well-known street sign, depicting a sea captain taking the wheel of a ship, lay in the parking lot for weeks after being knocked down in a storm last October.
