Rockport — In an annual rite of spring, Midcoast Recreation Center has removed the ice at its indoor rink, a surface that provided hours of fun for hockey players and figure/community skaters the past six months.

Watch video below of the ice being removed.

Jesse Simko, arena director, said while MRC, a non-profit organiziation, took out its ice on Wednesday, March 18 due to growing health concerns around COVID-19 (coronavirus) and overall public safety, he also has an important message.

“When the world around you is falling apart, skate on and have hope," Simko said.

Simko said for those interested in donating to MRC, which also has indoor tennis courts and fitness area (among other community-based recreational offerings), there is a link on the main page of the organization's website at

"All proceeds will help MRC continue to provide great recreational services when the pandemic subsides and we’re able to go back to business as usual," Simko said. "Thank you for all of the support."
