Getting a new mattress can be an extremely exhausting process. You will have countless models to choose from, and you’ll probably be tempted to go for the cheaper ones, since a good mattress is known to cost a pretty penny. Considering the fact that the average lifespan of a mattress is 10-12 years, you will surely be spending 3-4 years sleeping on it. With that being said, you will need to learn a few things before making the purchase.

Mattress Types

In order to make the right choice, you will need to know what your options are. There are four basic types of mattresses, each with their pros and cons, which is why you will need to get familiar with them before you get down to the store.

  • Innerspring – These are known as the classic mattresses. They’re the most common, as well as the least expensive. Innerspring mattresses have metal coils inside, which determine how bouncy it will be. You should consider buying this type of mattress if you’re on a budget. However, know that they aren’t really known for their durability.

  • Latex – There are two types of latex mattresses that you can choose from – Talalay and Dunlop. Talalay mattresses are very soft, while Dunlop ones are considered to be denser and firmer. Certain manufacturers also sell a blend of Dunlop and Talalay. Getting a latex mattress would be the perfect choice for you if you’re looking for strong support and natural materials. Nevertheless, keep in mind that they’re more expensive than the other types.

  • Memory Foam – If you’re currently experiencing any discomfort, trouble sleeping or joint and muscle pain due to your current mattress, then you should consider getting a memory foam one. They are excellent when it comes to reducing pressure on your body. Memory foam mattresses will allow you to sink into the foam and remain cradled in a single position. Basically, the thicker the memory foam layer is the more you’ll sink. Nevertheless, you should know that if you’re cradled into one position all night, you will probably heat up as you sleep. There are some brands that make memory foam mattresses that won’t cause you to sink into them so deeply. For example, getting a Novaform mattress will provide the same comfort level, but won’t allow you to sink into it, which means that you won’t have to worry about heating up. Memory foam mattresses are recommended for side sleepers and individuals who want to reduce pressure on their bodies.

  • Adjustable Air - In case you and your partner have a hard time picking out a mattress that you both agree on, then you should probably get an adjustable air one. These mattresses allow you to choose a different firmness from your partner. You will also be able to choose between a soft or firm feel whenever you want.

You should also know the usual mattress sizes before you go to a store. Some of the most popular sizes include King, Queen, and Twin. In order to get the perfect mattress, you will need to determine the right size for you. Know that the height of the mattress needs to be longer than your height. To determine the right width, you should lie in the middle of the mattress and place your arms behind your head. If they aren’t going beyond the edge of the mattress, then the width is fine.

Now that you know exactly what type of mattress to look for in the store, it’s time to try out some models. Keep in mind that you should always check how comfortable a mattress is before you commit to buying it. This means that you should try it out in a store. In order to get a feel of how comfortable it is, make sure to try out different sleeping positions and lie down on a mattress for at least 15 minutes. In case you’re looking to buy a mattress online, be sure to go down to a brick and mortar shop and try out the model before you actually order it.
