During the Panthers' homecoming, the boys soccer teams tied 2-2 in double-overtime, while the visiting Eagle girls prevailed 1-0 in a doubleheader pitch event.

Waldoboro — When Lincoln County high school athletic rivals Medomak Valley and Lincoln Academy meet, in any sport at any time of the year, it usually means hard-fought, competitive and intense battles, with neither willing to give an inch or concede a moment of time.

That again was the case on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 16 on the soccer pitch on a hot, humid, late-summer day, as the Panthers welcomed their neighbors to their annual weekend homecoming celebration.

As always, the visiting Eagles proved fun guests, but did spoil at least a portion of Medomak Valley's feel-good homecoming, as Lincoln Academy scored late in the second half to pull out a 1-0 victory in the girls contest, while the boys squads battled to a 2-2, double-overtime tie.

In the doubleheader, the girls played in the early afternoon in the tougher of the heat, while the boys toiled mid-afternoon and got a small reprieve when the sun settled a bit.

In any case, the games were close affairs and up for grabs, as athletic contests often are between the schools separated by about 15 miles.

Boys game

Lincoln Academy grabbed the early momentum with a goal in the first few minutes of the game, but Medomak Valley rebounded to take a 2-1 cushion before the Eagles tied the game later in the second half.

The opponents had other strong scoring chances, including hitting crossbars and just missing head-ins from close range. In fact, the keepers made a handful of standout plays to keep the game tied.

The Eagles actually had a golden chance to perhaps grab the win in the final seconds of the second five-minute overtime when they were awarded a penalty kick after a Panther push in the penalty box. But the shot was kicked high and wide and the game ended in a deadlock.

The teams played 80 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtimes, but, ultimately, settled nothing.

For Medomak Valley, Wyatt Post scored both goals, the first with 26:35 left in the first half and the second with 37:02 remaining in the second.

For LA, Linus Lindbuechl scored a little more then three minutes into the game, at the 36:21-mark of the first half, while Will Shaffer tied the game, off an assist from Jorge Pulido Fernandez, with 12:52 left in the second half.

Aiden Starr and Sam Laemmle played well in goal for the Panthers and Eagles, respectively. Starr finished with eight saves and Laemmle six.

Lincoln Academy finished with a 14-8 edge in shots, while the Panthers held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Defensively, Jensen Willis was a strong, vocal field general in front of the goalie for the Panthers.

With 14.4 left in the second OT, Medomak Valley was whistled for a push in the penalty box and that gave Eagle Nate Simmons a penalty kick, but his boot sailed high and wide and Panther players, coaches and fans breathed a sigh of relief.

Starr also made a key save on a close-range, late-game breakaway shot by Lincoln Academy, among his other stellar efforts in front of the net.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Medomak Valley (3-2-1, 7.7237 points) is 11th, while Brewer (5-0, 18.3163 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Lincoln Academy is 2-0-2 and sixth in 16-team Class B South.

Girls game

The rivals literally and figuratively stood toe-to-toe for 80 minutes and it appeared they might settle nothing as neither could put the ball in the net — despite solid opportunities.

But that changed in the final five minutes of the second half as Lincoln Academy, which had withstood consistent pressure from the Panthers at different times earlier in the game, knocked in the contest's only goal.

Tatum Hancock scored with 4:49 left in the second half as her shot sailed into the upper right side of the net to the goalie's left.

Medomak Valley carried a large portion of the offensive play and finished with six corner kicks to none for the Eagles.

Kortney McKenna and Kayla Donlin proved sturdy in the net for the Eagles and Panthers, respectively.

In fact, McKenna came up huge in the final seconds and kept the Panthers off the board — and prevented the game from going to overtime.

As time wound down, Panther Sadie Cohen served up a long kick to the goalmouth as streaking teammate Cassie Smeltzer bore down on McKenna, who bolted aggressively out of the net.

As the ball rolled just a few feet from the goal line, McKenna pounced to make the save and then held on tight before Smeltzer could knock in the equalizer..

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Medomak Valley (1-5, 1.9388 points) is 15th, while Caribou (5-0, 19.3878 points) is first in the 21-team region. The top 14 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Lincoln Academy is 3-1-1 and fifth in 16-team Class B South.
