Rockport — A 26-year-old Hope woman died and two other people were injured from a head-on crash Wednesday evening on Route 17 in Rockport.

Camden/Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne said Elizabeth Sherfey died in the Feb. 17 crash that occurred at about 6:15 p.m. by Rocky Pond.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Sherfey was driving a 2004 Toyota Matrix westbound. At the same time, a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica operated by Darreyl Wright, 42 of Union was driving east towards Rockland.

The cars crashed head-on.

A passenger in Sherfey's vehicle Leeman Webb, 22, of Limestone, was injured but the injuries were not considered life threatening. Wright was treated and released from the hospital.

Multiple ambulances responded, as did Rockport and Camden Police and the Knox County Sheriff's Office. A Maine State Police reconstruction specialist also was called to the scene.

A Lifeflight helicopter was sent to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Sgt. James Moore is leading the investigation.

Route 17 was re-opened to traffic shortly before 9 p.m.
