Hope Town Office sees staff vacancies

By Daniel Dunkle | Oct 12, 2020

Hope — The Town Office in Hope has seen a lot of turnover this year and is currently going into a major election with two positions unfilled.

Town Administrator Samantha Mank confirmed Oct. 9 that both the town clerk and bookkeeper positions are vacant.

Town Clerk Alexenia "Allie" Payor, who started in January of this year, has just been hired as deputy clerk by the Town of Thomaston.

Her sister, Chelsea Summers, who was the town clerk in Hope from 2017 to January 2020 resigned to take a position in the South Thomaston town office.

And Mank fired bookkeeper Langley Willauer Aug. 7.

"The Town Administrator is temporarily serving as Interim Town Clerk, Interim Tax Collector and Interim Registrar of Voters so that the Town remains compliant with the law," Mank said.

She added, "Surprisingly, the Maine Municipal Association does not maintain a list of qualified individuals who might be able to serve in short-term vacancies (similar to a substitute teacher roster that a school would maintain). However, the Town Administrator was able to ask for and receive immediate assistance through a listserv for Maine City and Town Managers Association (MCTMA). The Select Board would like to express its heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the staff from the Towns of Windsor, Lincolnville, China, Morrill, Somerville, Thomaston, and South Thomaston, who have already come to help out in the Hope Town Office."

The Select Board held a special meeting Oct. 6 to discuss the vacancies, she reported, and "reassure the citizens of Hope with information about the many preparations that have been and continue to be made to be sure the upcoming election proceeds flawlessly and in full compliance with law and best practices."

"Applications and resumes for both vacancies are being accepted and interviewing will begin soon in order to fill the positions. In the meantime, the Town is seeking qualified former or retired Town Clerks or Bookkeepers who are interested in a temporary position until permanent employees are hired. If anyone is interested in either position as a permanent or temporary employee, they are encouraged to email the Town of Hope at admin@hopemaine.org."
