Hope — This year's annual town report was dedicated to resident Barbara Ludwig on June 1. The dedication ceremony was held at the Hope Town Office, and a copy of the report, which bears Ludwig's image, was presented to her by Select Board members Richard Crabtree, Wendy Pelletier and Sarah Ann Smith.

Earlier this year Ludwig received another commendation from the town, when she was presented with the Boston Post Cane, and honor bestowed upon the town's oldest resident.

"I'm 94, and I'm proud of it," said Ludwig at the March 30 ceremony. She said her secret to longevity is hard work.

Ludwig was born in Lincolnville on Aug. 18, 1923, and she had her first job at the age of 13, caring for a blind woman in the community. She moved to Hope shortly after she was married in 1943. Ludwig said that she spent most of her adult life working on poultry and dairy farms in the area, milking cows and collecting eggs.

"Some children today don't even know where milk comes from anymore," said Ludwig, who still shares stories of her early life in Hope with her grandchildren. "I've always been a hard worker, and I was out gathering eggs the day after my wedding."

Ludwig is keeping busy at the moment by getting started on a spring cleaning of her home, and is looking forward to working in her garden as the weather improves. She is very proud of a large raspberry patch at her home, which she started with six plants. In years past she has sold her raspberries at the Hope General Store, and if the growing season is a good one, her berries might appear there again.

Of her six children, one of her sons lives in Macon, Ga., and a daughter lives in Connecticut, but Ludwig says she feels blessed to have a wonderful family and many relatives nearby in Hope.
