Our pet picks of the week is Hobbes, an energetic, almost 2-year-old, little "tank" on four legs. He is part Jack Russell and has the energy and determination typical of the breed. He is smart, strong and loves to play. Hobbes has participated in our K-9 Corrections Program, so he has the basic good behaviors down and is willing to learn even more. Hobbes would be best for a family with older kids. He likes other dogs, especially playing with them, but would not be a good fit for a home with cats. Stop by the shelter and meet this special dog with personality and love to spare.

Eat for Pete's sake is today, Sept. 7, and you'll be helping us feed shelter animals. Dine out at one of these participating restaurants on this special day and they'll donate a portion of their proceeds to the shelter: Athens Mediterranean Pizzeria, Badger Cafe & Pub, Blue Sky Cantina, The Harbor Gawker, Park Street Grille, The Haven, Home Kitchen Café, Offshore Restaurant, Primo Restaurant, In Good Company, Hatchet Mountain Publick House, Main Street Markets, Sweet Sensations & 3 Dogs Cafe, and Come Spring Cafe. Thank you to these wonderful restaurants for their support of PMHS!

This year’s “Pete” is Nova, a 6-year-old lovable hound/pit mix who was found wandering Thomaston in June. Thin and almost hairless upon arrival, after months of special baths and hypoallergenic food, her golden fur is returning. Nova is very affectionate and loves to bury her head under your arm and stare lovingly into your eyes. The special food Nova eats is helping her to get ready for a loving family someday soon. Eat for Pete's sake, and for all the other animals at the shelter, so they know where their next meal is coming from.

Helping homeless animals is as easy as taking a walk at our Whisker Walk & Family Fun Day along the boardwalk Saturday, Sept. 16, at Harbor Park in Rockland. Join fellow animal lovers and shelter supporters and walk with or without a dog to help animals less fortunate. After the walk you can enjoy: a try your luck agility course, Canine Good Citizen demonstration, face-painting, tie dye bandanas, Doggy Day Spa, hot dogs, Bill's famous fries, scrumptious baked goods, rescue groups and much more.

Register now and start helping us save more lives by collecting pledges from friends, families and coworkers. The money raised is vital in providing food, shelter and medical care to the 1,200-plus animals that come through our doors each year. Thank you to our Best in Show sponsor, First National Bank, and to all our business community whisker walk sponsors. For a complete list of sponsors and to register for the event, visit hskcme.org.

Wish list: Garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, wet cat food (pate style); gift certificates to Walmart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses are also a great help. Thanks for your support.
