Hendersons, Andrews grab Class A North titles, Windjammers qualify seven to states

For second straight week, Windjammers second to Mount Ararat/Brunswick

South Paris — For decades, Windjammer wrestlers have experienced a boatload of mat success and the 2019-2020 high school campaign has been no different.

After a stellar dual-match campaign, Camden Hills entered the postseason with high hopes and despite topping the field for conference and regional honors last season, Camden Hills took a small step back this year.

A week after a second-place finish in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet, the Windjammers again found themselves the first runner-up behind Mount Ararat of Topsham/Brunswick in the Class A North championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Oxford Hills.

Camden Hills finished with 156.5 points and 33-17 head-to-head record on the day, buoyed by seven top-four finishers, including Julian Henderson (1st at 106 pounds), Eric Andrews (1st at 113), Ian Henderson (1st at 152), Josh Saucier (2nd at 126), Griffin Carnell (2nd at 145), Henry Pharris (3rd at 182) and Ben MacWilliams (4th at 285). The Hendersons are brothers.

Those wrestlers qualified for the state Class A championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at Sanford.

The team scores from the Class A North event were: Mount Ararat/Brunswick 170, Camden Hills 156.5, Skowhegan 129.5, Cony of Augusta 119, Oxford Hills of South Paris 117.5, Nokomis of Newport 106, WIndham-Gray-New Gloucester 87, Mount Blue of Farmington 66.5, Erskine Academy of South China 65, Morse of Bath 63, Hermon 20, Gardiner 18, Bangor 10, Messalonskee of Oakland 10, Lawrence of Fairfield 6, Hall-Dale of Farmingdale 4, Greely of Cumberland 3 and Wiscasset no score.

The individual Camden Hills results, with Windjammer wrestlers listed first, were:

106 pounds — Julian Henderson received a first-round bye; pinned Jacob St. Pierre, MtB, at 0:10; pinned Bryce Attkisson, OxH, at 1:48; and pinned Kameron Michaud, Con, at 0:38 in the championship final. Henderson finished first.

113 pounds — Eric Andrews received a first-round bye; pinned Nathan Lefebre, Con, at 0:47; pinned Jake Emond, EA, at 5:02; and pinned Jared Bellemare, OxH, at 2:17 in the championship final. Andrews finished first.

120 pounds — Zach Wallingford received a first-round bye; was pinned by Brycen Kowalsky, MtA, at 3:51; received a double-bye; and was pinned by Ahmad Ahamd, Cony, at 1:11.

126 pounds — Josh Saucier received a first-round bye; pinned Isaiah Genther, Mor, at 1:31; pinned Cole Brann, Gar, at 3:40; and was pinned by Calvin Peck, Nok, at 3:10 in the championship final. Saucier finished second.

132 pounds — Devin Hutcheson received a first-round bye; lost to Caiden Trask, Mess, 5-2; received a bye; pinned Quintin Webster, Mess, at 0:27; and lost to Robert Davies, Skow, 5-0.

145 pounds — Griffin Carnell received a first-round bye; won by technical fall over George Butts, Win, 17-0; pinned Adam Loewen, MtB, at 5:04; and was pinned by Caden Kowalsky, MtA, at 3:16 in the championship final. Carnell finished second.

152 pounds — Ian Henderson received a first-round bye; pinned Dakota Andow, Con, at 0:49; beat Owen McDuffie, Win, 9-7; and beat Brett Raio, MtA, 5-3, in the championship final. Henderson finished first.

160 pounds — Hayleigh Martz was pinned by Connor Bell, Gar, at 0:59; received a bye; and was pinned by Stefan Baciu, Nok, at 0:24.

170 pounds — Nathaniel Stanley pinned Seth Lothrop, Con, at 1:35; was pinned by Tucker Nicholas, MtB, at 4:46; and was pinned by Robert Reed, Mor, at 2:18.

182 pounds — Henry Pharris received a first-round bye; pinned Mason Wolfe, Skow, at 3:02; lost to Casey Mills, Con, 7-3; pinned Jason Hart, Wind, at 2:32; and beat Isaak Sinclair, Mor, 3-1, in the consolation final. Pharris finished third.

195 pounds — Kai Sassa pinned Scott Shaples, MtA, at 0:17; was pinned by Isaak Peavey, EA, at 0:21; received a bye; beat Calvin Gould, Nok, 15-9; and lost to Camryn Atwood, Skow, 6-2.

220 pounds — Ben Nautel received a bye; lost to Adam Baugh, Con, 3-1; received a bye; pinned Elizabeth Trask, Skow, at 0:53; and lost to Garrett Allen, Wind, 1-0.

285 pounds — Ben MacWilliams received a bye; beat Jeff Kirk, Ban, 7-5; was pinned by Romeo Mellits, Her, at 3:00; beat Jream Tripp, OxH, 4-2; and was pinned by Brayden Doucette, Skow, at 2:59 in the consolation final. MacWilliams finished fourth.
