Hard-working Mariners look to 'grow and develop' this fall

Thomaston — The following is a synopsis of the 2017 Oceanside High School boys soccer team:

Coach/years coached current team: Matt Petrie, third year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 5-8-1, 13th in Class B North. The Mariners did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Seniors Nick Upham, Josh Peaco, Duncan McKnight, Keller Lessard and Leo Reid; juniors Luca Siletti, Zach Hersey, Isaiah Millay, Uriah Thongsophophone and Igli Bixhaku; sophomores Nick Banda, Nick Jones, Caleb Powell, Ben Poland, Kolya Philbrook and Rohobot Carlson; and freshmen Sam Vose, Nate Coombs, Gavyn Tower, Andry Sermeno, Corbin Farnham, Alan Grindle, Will Eaton, Aidan Bonzagni and Ian Thumith.

Known graduation losses: Coby Dorr, Sam Townsend, Zack Robinson, Brad Nystrom, Levi Post and Yarik Philbrook.

Significant impact athletes: Peaco, Reid, Thongsophophone, Kolya Philbrook and Poland.

Team strengths: Tenacity and work ethic.

Team goals: To grow and develop throughout the season.

Top league opponents: Waterville, Medomak Valley of Waterville and Morse of Bath.

Outlook: The Mariners lost six players to graduation, but gained nine more in a large freshmen class. Petrie said he hopes his squad will play its best by season’s end “and have an opportunity to carry that into the playoffs.”
