LINCOLNVILLE — A group of the hardiest souls braved the subzero temperature Jan. 1, and plunged into the frigid salt water at Lincolnville Beach, for the annual Dip 4 Derek Polar Challenge fundraiser.

The event benefits the Derek O'Brien Trust, named for Derek O'Brien, who suffered a broken spine in a 2005 swimming accident. Peter Roper, who organizes the fundraiser, reported that the temperature was minus three degrees, with wind chill of minus 13 degrees.

Three females and six males ran into the Penobscot Bay, where sea smoke could be seen over the water, between the beach and the town fish pier in the near distance.

Most of the group was out of the ocean as quickly as they got in, but two super humans lingered for an extra minute or two, up to their chests in the salty Penobscot Bay on one of the coldest New Years Day's seen in a long time.

Roper took the plunge himself Jan. 1. "To say the least it was cold but worth it to support the Derek O Brien foundation trust," he wrote in an email.

For those who could not brave the weather, it is not too late to make a donation to the Derek O’Brien Trust at Key Bank, c/o Peter Roper, 10 Spring St., Camden, ME 04843.

Huge Kudos to Peter Roper and all the much braver men and women then I who dipped.  But got to say a couple of them seemed pretty much comfortable in that water!
