Grocery store employee raises money for good cause

Waldoboro — A longtime employee of the Hannaford store in Waldoboro had no problem being shrink-wrapped during his shifts Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2 and 3.

Billy Gonzales, a 20-plus-year veteran of the store, volunteered his services to help the store raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine.

When Assistant Store Manager Jake Schwarz asked Gonzales if he would help with the annual fundraiser, his response was "Yes, tie me up."

The initial goal of $800 was raised in just three hours, according to Schwarz, and Gonzales agreed to keep the challenge going as long as he could get out by noon Sunday in order to watch the Super Bowl.

With in-store announcements over the intercom and people coming in after seeing it posted on Facebook, Gonzales more than doubled the initial goal -- raising $1,782.

"He did very well," Schwarz said, adding, "and he enjoyed watching management do his job for him while he was tied up."
