Goodwill, home care agency join forces for dementia training

Jul 05, 2019
ASK ... for Home Care's Sarah Dailey, director of nursing, seated, and Joanne Miller, consultant, are the trainers in a partnership with Goodwill Industries to provide training in dementia care.

Rockland — ASK…for Home Care is working with Goodwill Industries through its Incumbent on the Job Training Program to train five full-time employees to provide care to clients with dementia.

Instructors are Joanne Miller, ASK consultant, who has more than 40 years' experience and training in dementia care, and Sarah Dailey, director of nursing. Field supervision will be augmented by Mallorie Shuman, staff nurse, and Christy Preston, social work intern. On-the-job training will take place at the Homesteads in Cushing and Owls Head, home-sharing settings for frail elderly who wish to remain in a homelike environment.

Students are learning about different types and causes of dementia. They are studying the importance of environment and specialized communication techniques. They are learning how to apply their knowledge of life stories to the development of care plans and the way that personal care is provided.

This training will last seven weeks. Participants will receive recognition certificates and pay raises upon completion. The training has already had an effect on the way trainees are caring for their clients. ASK hopes to be able to repeat this training next winter. Only incumbent workers are eligible, so interested persons should consider applying for work now if they want to be considered for future training.

ASK is also considering training in dementia care for family caregivers. Interested professional or family caregivers may contact ASK at 354-7077 or
