Freeport — Olympian Joan Benoit Samuelson presented an honorary "Beach to Beacon" award to Robert Gomez — the athlete who helped fallen fellow runner Jesse Orach over the finish line so Orach could be the top Maine men's runner in this year's TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10-Kilometer Road Race — on Thursday, Aug. 10.

The ceremony was held at the Thos. Moser's Showroom, 149 Main Street in Freeport, as the Handmade American Furniture maker’s Beacon Boxes have been awarded as trophies for the winners of the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K since 2014.

Each Beacon Box is engraved with the Beach to Beacon 20th anniversary race logo and signed by Joan Benoit Samuelson and Tom Moser.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, the winners of the 10K road race received their prizes.

Steve Wyman, Thos. Moser Freeport Showroom manager, first envisioned the Beacon Box, and thought having a keepsake box as a trophy for the annual race would be a treasured and useful reminder of the winners' accomplishments.

Gomez’s sportsmanship earned him an honorary Beacon Box. Gomez is a Windham resident and former resident of Waldoboro.

The Beacon Box was inspired by one Thos. Moser first created in honor of Joan Benoit Samuelson and of the annual TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race that she founded and proudly chairs in her home state of Maine.

The Beacon Box, like all Thos. Moser furniture, is handmade at the Handmade American Furniture company’s shop in Auburn, and incorporates dovetail joinery, a signifier of Thos. Moser quality and craftsmanship that has endured for 45 years.

Thos. Moser operates retail showrooms in Freeport, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco.
