Giving credit where credit is due – Part 1

By Reade Brower | Jul 16, 2020

Let us give credit where credit is due. As President Trump finishes his first term it’s time to assess all the good things he did and didn’t do to “Make America Great Again.” This list is long, so this is Part One. Part Two will follow next week, complete with some comments from readers, if they are printable.

I honor and encourage his supporters to expand upon this column, with one request. Talk about Trump’s accomplishments or where this column misrepresented truth. Do not talk about Obama, four years removed from office. Trump, and supporters, have been obsessed with tearing down anything Obama did and this detracts from what Trump has done and is doing. Starting with “crowd size,” continuing to his madcap desire to deconstruct the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) — with nothing to replace it, Obama bashing is a mantra that doesn’t move the discussion forward. Obama is gone, Trump is in — his show now for over three years.

Likeability and trust

Let’s start with an interesting FACT. In New York City, home to Trump, and his legacy tower, the 2016 vote was overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton. I think it was something like 9 to 1. Think about that; the people that know you best (your homies) voted 90% for your opponent. This is a subjective grade better left to the individual reader.

Foreign policy

Thanks for paying for the wall Mexico. North Korea: Thanks for taming “Rocket Man” and getting him to stop testing nukes. Thanks for stripping respect for us being the greatest country in the world, as viewed by foreign allies, by opting out of treaties and pacts that the USA should be leading, like climate change. Thanks for toughening up trade policies so we get a fair shake; you have China right where you want them. Thanks for showing Russia your strength, standing up to whom YOU HAVE CALLED “your new best friend,” Vlad Putin; you took his word that he didn’t meddle in our election and forget about the recent bounties on our military spearheaded by Russia — Trump either didn’t care (bad) or didn’t know (worse). “GRADE F----.”

Immigration: The Wall

The Wall, paid for by Mexico, was key part of the Trump platform. If trying was rewarded with a grade, he would get an “A.” Separating families is not a “win.” Keeping drug lords out is good; just don’t use that as the backboard to keeping the good immigrants at the other side of the border. Remember what made America great were immigrants filling manual labor jobs (picking fields, dishwashing, helping hospitals with entry-level positions, etc.), jobs our American citizens don’t want. “GRADE D”; we need immigrant reform; he’s forcing the issue. Just in — illegally diverted money to fund his wall, grade change to “GRADE D-."

Lead by example

Humble is as humble does. Mockery, tweeting like a 10-year-old, cheating on your wife with a prostitute, cheating students at your phony college, cheating donors at your nonprofit, cheating vendors while hording as much for yourself as possible during your multiple bankruptcies. Making America Great is a slogan worthy of a carnival barker, not the leader of the free world. “GRADE F-."

Confronting racism

Trump's recent tweets of white supremacy taunts of “white power” play to the part of his base that is white supremacist. Everyone who supports Trump is not racist, but safe to say most racists support Trump. He doesn’t confront racism, he stokes the fire. “Grade D.”

Intelligence

Trump is smarter than the generals. Smarter than the doctors. NOT. “GRADE D-." He really isn’t that smart, and his words aren’t “really, really perfect.”

COVID-19 response

First he said it was nothing. Then he said it was like the flu. Then he said we had the best testing in the world. Then he said you could kill it by drinking battery acid (maybe it was something else like household cleaning products, but you get the point). Then he said reopen, Mike Pence is doing a beautiful job and his task force is winning. Then he said we had flattened the curve (what curve is he looking at — cases have risen dramatically). Trump doesn’t listen to science or experts, refusing to follow any guidelines (like wearing a mask himself) that are based on common sense and respect for others. “GRADE F-."

Next week in Part 2, we look at Trump’s negotiating skills, health care acumen, his handling of the economy, his Supreme Court influence, and his truth telling.

“We must dissent from the fear, the hatred, and the mistrust. We must dissent from a nation that buried its head in the sand waiting in vain for the needs of its poor, its elderly, and its sick to disappear and just blow away. We must dissent from a government that has left its young without jobs, education, or hope. We must dissent from the poverty of vision and timeless absence of moral leadership. We must dissent, because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better.” — Thurgood Marshall, U.S. Supreme Court justice (1908-1993)

One more thing, he is a bottle blond with the worlds most interesting comb over topping his orange stained face. He prefers heroes who have not been captured. So all you vets with a Trump flag and a POW flag need to make up your mind. He has slammed Gold Star Mothers, so you Vet’s have another decision to make since no trump has ever served America. While I was doing 4 short combat tours in Nam trump was playing golf with his poor injured foot which gave him 5 deferments from the draft. I need to gargle some bleach now to keep the Covid away and switch on fox noise to see what I am supposed to believe today.
