Geology workshop to be offered at library July 18

Jul 09, 2018

Union — In partnership with the Vose Library, 392 Common Road,, Dirigo Learning will be offering free hands-on geology learning opportunities throughout the month of July. Held in conjunction with the library's Libraries Rock! summer reading program, Dirigo Learning will offer both a hands-on museum and a workshop for children.

The hands-on museum, located in the Vose Library's children's room, is made up of a collection of more than 40 different rock and crystal specimens, including fossils, crystals, polished river rocks and Maine granite. Many of the specimens included in the museum have been sourced from the Maine landscape, while others have been gathered across the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Accompanying the specimen collection is a series of questions that can be used to support young visitors in observing closely and thinking deeply about what they notice, allowing children's natural curiosity to drive their learning. Visitors to the museum will also find a small collection of geology-themed children's books that can be used to support further geology-based learning. The hands-on museum will be on display throughout the month of July and can be visited during the library's regular open hours.

In addition to the museum, Dirigo Learning will offer Geology Rocks!, a hands-on workshop for children, Wednesday, July 18, at 10:30 a.m., also at the Vose Library. Participants in the workshop will learn about the three major types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous), try out scratch-testing for rock identification, and collect and identify their own specimens from the Maine landscape. The workshop is intended for ages 6 to 10, and registration is required. To register, call the Vose Library at 785-4733 or e-mail
