Rockport — After a slow start to the season, the Camden Hills girls basketball team never lost hope as the Windjammers continued to work hard, to improve, to become more consistent and, over time, put themselves in strong playoff position.

In fact, after an 0-4 start, the Windjammers split their next 12 games and continue to hold a solid spot for the quickly-approaching Class A North playoff tournament.

But, on Friday night, Feb. 1, the Windjammers ran into a hungry, pesky, late-season road opponent.

Visiting Mount Blue of Farmington, which continues to battle for a playoff spot in the same region, got off to a quick start against Camden Hills on Friday and held off a late charge by the hosts.

In a game that included a impressive, mesmerizing duel between two of the most talented all-around student-athletes in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference, the Cougars nipped the Windjammers 56-54.

Camden Hills senior Kassie Krul and Mount Blue junior Lexi Mittelstadt proved smooth operators on the floor and free-throw line.

Kassie Krul poured in 32 points and made 10-of-15 free throws (67 percent). Mittelstadt netted 26 points, which included two 3-pointers and 12-of-14 foul shots (86 percent). The players also were light's-out from the charity stripe as they combined for 22-of-29 foul shots (76 percent).

"We had a slow start to the game," said Windjammer coach Kim Kuhn. "We haven’t had a game in eight days. Mount Blue made their free throws. It was a great duel between Krul and Mittelstadt. Two great players. It’s going to be an interesting [final] week. Every game is important."

Mount Blue led 17-8, 24-16 and 36-34 at the quarter breaks.

For Camden Hills, Kassie Krul netted 32 points, all but two over the final three quarters. She tallied seven in the second, nine in the third and 14 in the furious fourth.

Miranda Dunton added 11 points, nine in the third to help keep the hosts close, while Audrey Bowman chipped in six; Anya Babb-Brott, two; and Seanna Montgomery, Grace O'Connell and Kaylyn Krul, one.

Kassie Krul (14 rebounds, 2 assists), Montgomery (6 rebounds), Dunton (8 rebounds), O'Connell (3 rebounds), Bowman (2 rebounds), Babb-Brott (2 rebounds) and Kaylyn Krul (3 rebounds) also compiled other statistics.

The Windjammers made 18-of-31 foul shots (58 percent), but did not connect on 3-pointer.

For Mount Blue, Mittelstadt pumped in 26 points, including two treys. She scored eight points in the first quarter, three in the second, eight in the third and seven in the fourth. The Cougars helped their cause with five treys, including two from Eva Stevens and one from Mackenzie Libby, and made a whopping 19-of-23 free throws (83 percent).

Also for the Cougars, Libby added 10 points; Jacelyn Daggett, eight; Stevens, six; and Sierra Fay, Aislynn Provencher and Rylee Keaten, two.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Camden Hills (6-10, 51.7901 points) is sixth, while Skowhegan (16-0, 158.3951 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

Mount Blue is 7-9 and ninth.
