Waldoboro — The high school football season is just around the corner, but a handful of Midcoast student-athletes mixed it up on the gridiron — well, on the Medomak Valley High School practice field, that is — on Tuesday, July 25.

Players from Medomak Valley and Oceanside squared off in a 7-on-7 summer exhibition contest, which saw the squads air it out with old-style, two-hand touch action with a handful of parents and spectators taking in the early-evening football spectacle.

There were no pads or helmets, no officials or flags being thrown. Just a handful of local teenagers looking to sharpen and hone skills with the regular season a few short weeks away.

The Panthers — along with Camden Hills and other teams — have participated in 7-on-7 games the past few weeks at Morse High School in Bath. Tuesday in Waldoboro was Oceanside’s first foray into 7-on-7 summer competition.

The official “hands-off” period began on Sunday, July 30, with the first day of fall practices set to begin on Monday, April 14.

The regular season will begin for the Panthers and Mariners on Friday, Sept. 1. Oceanside will host Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield — last year’s state Class D champions — while Medomak Valley will travel to face Belfast. Both games will kick off at 7 p.m.

Oceanside and Medomak Valley, which will play during the upcoming season in Class C North, will square off for the first time in regular-season play on Friday, Sept. 29 in Waldoboro.
