Bangor — Five Town Football's middle school team may lack the numbers and size of many foes on the gridiron, but in its season-opener on Tuesday, Sept. 4, the youngsters showed there is more to football than meets the eye.

With a roster of 16 student-athletes, 11 of whom are seventh-graders, the young Windjammer squad rode a stingy defense and solid rushing attack to an impressive 38-16 road victory over the Rams.

The Windjammers consist of Danny Bartlett, Colby Buck, Asa Burgess, Franklin Coffey, Hayden Davis, Zach Gilbert, Will Haslam, J.T. Johndro, Cas Lavoie, Cameron Lawrence, Dylan Lowe, Louis Mainella, Aiden Merrill, Thomas Mitchell, Miles Spear and Mason Thomas. Kenny Johndro is the head coach, assisted by Joe Coffey and Dan Davis.

With solid blocking from their line and lead backs, the 'Jammers churned out 284 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Mainella led all ball carriers with 226 yards and three TDs, with runs of four, 53 and 44 yards. Lavoie added the fourth rushing touchdown on a 16-yard scamper.

Not to be outdone by the offense, the team's defense allowed only 182 yards, 63 of which came on two Rams' scoring runs. The Windjammers' defense also produced two interceptions, one by Lowe, and another from Mainella, which he returned 26 yards for a touchdown. Mainella also added a 64-yard kickoff return for a score.

The young athletes will be at home on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. at the Camden Snow Bowl, when they host Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor.
