21-year-old also sentenced for injuring baby

Friendship man gets prison for sexual assault

Aug 05, 2017

Rockland — A 21-year-old Friendship man will serve three years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl and injuring a baby.

Andrew P. Baldwin Jr. was sentenced last week for sexually assaulting the girl, two counts of felony assault involving a child, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The case involving the baby was a Knox County case that occurred on two occasions in November 2015 in Rockland. He was charged for those offenses in early 2016.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald said Friday the child suffered injuries in the assaults

While Baldwin was free on bail on those charges, however, the assault against a 14-year-old girl occurred. According to court documents filed in Knox County Court, Lincoln County began investigating the assault in January 2017.

He was sentenced in Lincoln County Court in Wiscasset last week to nine years and six months in prison, with all but three years suspended, for the sexual assault. He was given concurrent two-year sentences, with all but six months suspended, for the cases involving the baby.

He committed crimes in 2015 against a child and charges were brought in early 2016 for which he obtained Bail. Finally, in July of 2017 he was given concurrent two year sentences with all but six months suspended. Why was he out on Bail for well over a year, maybe about 1.5 years before he does a plea deal for harming the child? There is that thing called, "right to a speedy trial" and further, the public has a right to be protected from acts such as those he was charged with.  During that expanded time that he was free on Bail Conditions, he commits a sexual assault against a 14 year old girl which happened around January 2017 and that gets him sentenced in July 2017 to nine years & six months in prison w/all but three years suspended. Maybe if the defendant had had a speedy trial at the time he was accused of felony assault involving a child and endangering the welfare of a child, the fourteen year old girl would not have been subjected to the sexual assault that occurred while this guy is roaming around on Bail Conditions for well over a year.  This is not an isolated case---it has become the normal practice in Knox County.

Only Three Years, less for good behavior, for sexual assault and child abuse???!!!!  I don't care how young or old.  The impact of his behavior will last forever in those he has assaulted.  If we are going to have a justice system to hold people accountable, hold them accountable for the impact of their actions!! He's not going to get the pshycological treatment he needs in 3 or less years of a prison environment!  Enough already!!  The system has to change!!
