Friends of Fort Knox names new director

Sep 04, 2018

Prospect — The Friends of Fort Knox announced Sept. 2 that Dean Martin will take over as executive director of Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory this week.

Martin retired from active duty in the Army last August as a lieutenant colonel after serving more than 24 years.

Originally from Wiscasset, he enlisted during Desert Storm in 1991 and was assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for basic training. He began his military career as a combat medic at Fort Carson, Colorado, and deployed to Somalia in 1994 before entering the Green to Gold program and returning to the University of Maine at Orono to finish his degree in psychology. He graduated in May 1996, was commissioned as an officer through ROTC, and married a week later.

Martin's service took him to Fort Irwin, California, and Fort Riley, Kansas, as an aeromedical evacuation (MEDEVAC) pilot with combat zone deployments to Kuwait and Iraq. In 2007, he earned a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Baylor University and was assigned to hospital administrator positions in Germany, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and, most recently, at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Healthcare Facility in Belgium.

A decorated combat veteran, Martin holds the Iraq Campaign Medal with two stars, Meritorious Service Medal (fourth award), Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (third award), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (fifth award), Presidential Unit Citation, and National Service Ribbon.

Prior to accepting the Fort Knox director position, he was finishing a Healthcare Administration Fellowship at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He currently lives in Orland with his wife and three children and enjoys woodworking and outdoor activities.

His vision for the near future is to help make this year’s Fright at the Fort event in October, featuring scenes from stories by Stephen King, even scarier than last year.
