CAMDEN — This past week, local residents and those who work on Camden Harbor filled an empty dory with flowers in memory of Sam Manning, who died July 9..

Whether they knew Manning or not, community members and visitors will know they saw him and his wife Susan, rowing their dory around Camden Harbor, year-round.

Twenty years ago, Virginia Thorndike told Village Soup readers that the Mannings had at that time been rowing around Camden Harbor daily for 23 years, unless it was raining or 20 below. By this July, their daily row had been seen by those on the harbor for 43 years.

Manning was known as a marine draftsman, and his illustrations can be found in boat building books, Wooden Boat Magazine and other publications. He played harmonica with friends at community gatherings, including the Soup Lunch in Lincolnville Center, and at the Public Landing.

Manning's full obituary can be found in this issue, and online at
