Rockland — Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 15 Wesley Lane off Route 17, across from Johnson Memorial Park, will host a free community picnic and concert Sunday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips and soft drinks will be provided, along with other surprise goodies. The church will “pass the hat” for a free-will offering to cover expenses and to support Aldersgate's mission.

Steelin’ Thunder, the local community steel drum band under the direction of Mike Miller, will perform rousing selections with a Caribbean flair ideal for dancing or just good ol’ lazy August afternoon listening. Formed in 2001, Steelin’ Thunder has 17 members representing eight different towns from Waldoboro to Belfast.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on the front lawn, as Steelin' Thunder and the grill will both be fired up at 4 p.m. The event will go on rain or shine, so bringing umbrellas or sunscreen as needed — and coming early for the best seats — is recommended.
