Rockland — Oceanside High School East Principal Tom Forti has announced his plans to retire.

Forti submitted a resignation letter April 9 to Regional School Unit 13 Interim Superintendent Michael Wilhelm.

His last day is July 31.

"It has been a pleasure to work with so many wonderful students, families, and colleagues during my 10 years here and I am thankful for the opportunity," he wrote in the letter.

Forti was named as principal of then-Rockland District High School by the School Administrative District 5 board in April 2008. He replaced Michael Gundel, who retired after 18 years. Forti came to work at RDHS in the summer of 2004 after serving as the chairman of the physical education department at an independent school in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. He worked as both an assistant principal and athletic director before becoming full-time assistant principal in 2006.

He has not returned requests for comment.

Tom...thank you for guiding our district through the trials of merging our schools and towns into one school system... There have been hills and valleys during this transition and while we cannot say they have all been successes we can be thankful that you were at the helm for our students.  You will be a tough act to follow and while I wish you were going to be with us for a while longer it would be selfish of me. Much success in your future projects whatever they may be.. R.S.U 13 will miss you!!
