Waldoboro — In the early going, Medomak Valley appeared in control, but as the fog rolled in to eventually engulf the lighted field, visiting Gorham asserted itself as the Rams scored 20 unanswered points en route to 20-6 high school football victory on Friday night, Sept. 15 as the outcome slightly dampened the Panthers' homecoming celebration.

The Panthers grabbed a 6-0 lead early in the game, but the Rams slowly, but surely gained traction and wiped out a halftime deficit with 20 second-half points.

Medomak Valley fell to 1-2 on the season with two competitive losses in recent weeks after a season-opening win over Belfast. Gorham improved to 2-1 on the young season.

The Panthers are ninth (1.2500 points) in the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North. Winslow (2-1, 31.2500 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

The Rams are sixth in Class B South, as Kennebunk leads the region at 3-0.

Friday's game saw a tremendous turnout and support for the game — and Panthers specifically — as the school's parking lots were filled with vehicles and the field was surrounded with hundreds of fans.

The players and coaches in the Medomak Youth Football program, which has one of the most impressive participation levels in the state for children's sports (peewees through middle school), were recognized at halftime.

In the game, Eli Miller scored the lone touchdown for the hosts, as he finished with six carries for 17 yards.

Tyler Simmons (16 carries for 100 yards) again was a workhorse on the ground for the Panthers, while Drew Severson (15 carries for 50 yards) and Korbin Daniels (8 carries for 31 yards) also chipped in with strong efforts.

On defense, Garrett Bowers (8 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles) and Korbin Daniles (3 solos, 4 assists) keyed that side of the ball for the Panthers.

"I thought we came out strong, but missed some opportunities to put Gorham into a hole," said Medomak Valley coach Ryan Snell. "As a young team we can't afford to miss those opportunities, and it's up to us to get better as a group and learn from each game.

"We were very appreciative of our crowd and the tremendous support we received. It's exciting to see the continued support of football in the community, and seeing it as the place to be on a Friday night in Waldoboro."

For Gorham, coach Andrew Hager said the Rams finished with 36 carries for 248 yards, led by Tyler Rollins with 145 yards and three touchdowns. Adam McKenny also compiled 102 yards on the ground.

Through the air, Jack Niles and Noah Lambert had 48 passing yards.

Defensively, Hunter Poitras and Ethan Stump finished with 12 tackles and Ben Eichner an interception.

In an interesting side note, Tim Spear, a Medomak Valley High School graduate, was on the Gorham sideline Friday night in his return to his alma mater. Spear played soccer on the same field years ago before the Panthers offered football. Spear is the Gorham athletic director after he served as an athletic trainer in that school district for about a decade.
